Gardening was one of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s passions. I visited the great Indonesian writer at his home in Jakarta in 1997, nine years before his death.
He was so good-humoured, and laughed so easily, that it was hard to believe that he had spent many years of his life in a prison camp.
i am a great admirer of Mr. Ghosh. this is the first time when i am reading the blog of a writer. It seems that the in-depth of the sight about any issue is gifted to the writers, and Mr. Ghosh is excellent about it. I read his novel “The Shadow Lines” in my grads and in there he has talked about relation and its complications, the confusion of grand ma about the boundaries, the serious under tone of the pain of partition referd in the “coming and going” thing and Roni’s frustration in the end about the regional and other divides etc.
I hope i will get a chance to read his another novels in which The seas of poppies will be the next….
I came across your blog tonight when i went looking for information about Morne Brabant (I’m reading River of Smoke). What a great surprise its been to then discover some entries that relate to my life (Seattle library for one)…but your encounter with Pramodya is the most unexpected & exciting of all. Thank you for sharing about it.
