The first Portuguese settlements in Bahia, Brazil, were founded at about the same time as those in Goa. Salvador was Brazil’s first capital and these pictures were all taken in the Pelourinho section of the city.

  1. Hello,
Why are the ‘Sons of Gandhi’ called so? I tried looking it up on the net but could not find much details. It will be nice to know the origins of the name.

    Thanks,
    Dibyajyoti

    1. If you google ‘Filhos de Gandhy’ you will find many entries, including images and songs. My guide book (Lonely Planet Brazil) says: ‘Each year the city (salvador) designates a theme for Carnaval and decorates the city accordingly…. The brotherhood Filhos de Gandhi (Sons of Gandhi) fills the avenue with its afoxe group, dressed alike in white terrycloth turbans, white sari-esque robes and their characteristic blue-and-white beads. Their favourite trick is splashing onlookers with cologne.’
