Several years ago, when I was a graduate student at UT Austin, my Islamic historiography professor assigned In an Antique Land (quite new at the time), which became one of my favorite books. This year, I am teaching a senior level history course for Texas Tech University – Waco, entitled “Great Cities.” I chose Cairo because it is a favorite of mine, even with its awful problems, and I assigned your book as a complement to our textbooks. What a pleasure it has been for me to re-read it, and for my students to read it. From the internet, I am gathering pictures of you and your time in Cairo to illustrate the people and places you describe so beautifully. My students have had very little travel, so it helps expose them to other parts of the world to see pictures along with a book like yours.
I just wanted to share with you how important this book (and your many others) have been to a number of students in our part of the world. I always enjoy your writing and your perspective, so thank you.
